Reconstruction in Myanmar underway

Plan is working with partners in Myanmar to bring normalcy back to the lives of the children and families affected by Cyclone Nargis in 2008.
September 18, 2009
Plan has mobilized $2.95 million USD to implement a three-year emergency response project in Myanmar to benefit children and their families affected by Cyclone Nargis in 2008.
On May 2, 2008, Cyclone Nargis hurtled through Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady delta region leaving a trail of unimaginable destruction in its wake. In a matter of hours, the cyclone resulted in the loss of over 84,500 lives, displaced hundreds of thousands, and injured and otherwise negatively affected untold millions more. Children were among some of the hardest hit.

Longer-term recovery and rehabilitation efforts have been focused on the construction and renovation of schools and early childhood care and development centers, the provision of psychosocial support and trauma healing services, as well as disaster risk reduction planning.
Despite numerous challenges, Plan and our partners are making real progress and have made meaningful improvements in the lives of children and their families.

Plan’s initial response to Cyclone Nargis was swift
Having no established presence in Myanmar, we entered into partnerships with local NGOs on the ground to provide immediate relief to those affected. Within days, we were involved in distributing food and essential non-food items as well as in providing trauma counseling.Longer-term recovery and rehabilitation efforts have been focused on the construction and renovation of schools and early childhood care and development centers, the provision of psychosocial support and trauma healing services, as well as disaster risk reduction planning.
