Flooding and landslides have devastated El Salvador, causing widespread damage in three of Plan’s program areas in the small Central American country.

Heavy rains from Hurricane Ida and a tropical depression from the Pacific have caused floods, land and mudslides in El Salvador. So far, over 150 deaths have been reported, close to 100 people are missing and over 15,000 have been affected. The worst affected areas are the capital San Salvador, San Vicente and La Libertad. The Government's Civil Protection Unit confirms that 209 homes have been destroyed and over 1,830 have been damaged. These figures are expected to rise as remote and less-accessible rural areas are reached.

Plan has requested and received initial emergency funding of $150,000 to supply emergency relief commodities to displaced families in temporary shelters. So far, we’ve delivered over 2,500 mattresses and blankets, over 1,250 food packages (sufficient for a family of five for one week), drinking water, and 1,260 hygiene kits.

In addition to providing emergency relief commodities, Plan is coordinating psychological assistance to affected children and families and implementing child protection activities to ensure the safety and comfort of children in temporary shelters. Plan is undertaking its activities in coordination with national and local governments and national and local NGOs.

Your contributions will go to Plan's work of providing relief commodities and child protection activities for children and families sheltering in schools and community buildings.
