Video: Escaping bonded labor in Nepal

November 19, 2010

See how Plan has helped rescue thousands of girls trapped in Nepal's bonded labor Kamalari system.

Around 10,000 to 12,000 girls - some as young as 6 years old - are forced to work as domestic servants in wealthy homes. They are often far from home and vulnerable to physical violence and sexual abuse.

In 2005, Plan began working with local non-governmental organization SWAN and since then has helped rescue and support nearly 2,000 girls in one district alone. The younger girls are helped back to school or given support with their education, while older girls are given vocational training and business start-up support.

Find out more about Plan's work in Nepal.

As a sponsor for over two years, I became aware of the Kamalari system through PlanUSA and was very hurt to learn about what these helpless and innocent young girls have to endure. I'm especially saddened by situations regarding children and try to do whatever I can to help. No one should lose their basic human rights due to poverty.
