Flooding adds to Sudan misery

Plan is helping children and families affected by the floods.

July 23, 2007
Plan is providing vital help to children and their families hit by flooding in North Sudan.

Heavy rains and the River Gash bursting its banks have affected four areas in which Plan works in the region: Kassala, Edweim/Alaga, Guli and North Kordofan. Several communities are currently inaccessible due to waterlogged roads that are hindering relief efforts and day-to-day work.

Houses washed away
Plan staff are currently on the ground assessing the situation with affected community members. Initial reports suggest several houses and food storage areas have been washed away.

Plan and other non-governmental organizations are arranging emergency relief efforts to help the affected communities. The immediate needs are shelter, drinking water and food. Plan is also aware that, because of the flooding, affected populations may also be at a higher risk of an outbreak of water-born diseases.

Plan is not new to flood relief operations. The area around Kassala State was flooded in 2003 and Plan was highly active in relief operations.
