Warm weather brings some relief

August 1, 2007
A rise in temperature has provided slight relief for the thousands of children suffering from severe weather in the Peruvian Andes.

For the past six weeks the region has been in the grip of a record-breaking cold spell with temperatures plummeting to -22º C. The improvement in the weather has brought a welcome respite.

"We will take full advantage of this window of opportunity. Our staff have also been affected by the extreme temperatures, but this has given them a great lift. We are now pushing on as fast as possible to get the survival kits to children before the weather turns again," said Katherine Yong, Plan Peru Resource Mobilisation and Communication Manager.

Survival kits
Plan is providing US$200,000 for survival kits for over 10,000 children and pregnant women as a result of uncommonly cold temperatures.

The kits comprise a blanket, poncho, chuyo (woolly hat) and socks, and will be provided to 95 affected communities around Cusco.
