Hurricane Felix rips through Nicaragua

Hurricane Felix hit the Caribbean coast of Central America Tuesday as a Category 5 storm. According to Reuters, at least 38 people have been killed on Nicaragua’s coast and more than 80 are missing. Thousands are sheltered in two schools in Puerto Cabeza. The hurricane has destroyed more than 90 percent of the area’s infrastructure.
Plan emergency team responds immediately
All Plan country emergency teams were activated from the beginning of this emergency and are working in close coordination with civil defense, municipalities, communities, UN and donor to assess the situation and respond appropriately. So far we have no reports of any direct damage to Plan communities.
Nicaragua
Regarding Nicaragua, which was hardest hit, Plan has made the decision to act. Children's and families' immediate needs are foods items (beans, rice, sugar, milk, oil) and non food items (clothes, blankets, among others).
At the moment we are evaluating the situation in close coordination with the Nicaraguan civil defense (SINAPRED) and are preparing a humanitarian response to the Atlantic area (RAAN).
El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras
So far our offices in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras have not reported any needs for Plan interventions. We will keep you informed about any further developments.
