7.9 earthquake hits Indonesia and generates tsunami
An earthquake measuring 7.9 according to the Indonesian Meteorological Institute has been reported off the west coast of Indonesia (Bengkulu Region). There are currently no reports of casualties. The area is mostly unpopulated, but there are reports of buildings shaking in the capital, Jakarta.

Tsunami warnings
A tsunami wave of about nine feet was reported to have hit Padang, Indonesia about 20 minutes after the earthquake. While we currently have received no reports of casualties, we have been warned that the tsunami may hit coastal Andhra Pradesh in India at 8PM. Plan partners are coordinating an evacuation of local people as a precaution.

Tsunami warnings have been issued for much of the Indian Ocean region. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said waves could hit Australia, India and Sri Lanka within a few hours. The warning has been lifted for Indonesia. Malaysia and Sri Lanka have issued tsunami warnings and India has issued a warning for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands; Australia has done the same for its Christmas and Cocos Islands.

We will keep you informed about any further developments.
