11 million are affected by flooding in Bangladesh, with over 800 dead
Floods are affecting 11 million people in 46 districts across Bangladesh. The water levels of major rivers Padma and Jamuna are continuing to rise and the situation has deteriorated. Hundreds of thousands of people forced from their homes are living on highlands and roadside areas and are facing shortages of food and clean water.

Deaths
In the past three months, 861 people have died in Bangladesh as a result of the floods. Major causes include drowning, diarrhea and snakebites. Water-borne diseases are spreading fast in the affected areas.
Flood damage
So far the floods have destroyed or damaged nearly one million homes and wiped out more than 800,000 acres of crops and damaged a further 983,000 acres; food prices have risen sharply as a result. More than 7,600 educational institutions have been damaged, and 557 completely destroyed; schools in affected areas have been closed indefinitely. Thousands of miles of roads have also been damaged or destroyed, and embankments, bridges and culverts washed away.
How Plan is helping
Plan Bangladesh is working with two partner organizations to address the emergency in one of our urban program units. Plan is also working with a local non-governmental organization, BRAC, on flood rehabilitation in 36 districts in the country. Plan Bangladesh may seek funds to address the flood emergency in Hatibandha Program Unit. Program delivery throughout the country has been hampered by the rainfall and flooding.
The government has not yet declared the flood situation as a national emergency but is receiving donations fom organizations and business.
