Thousands brave heat to join march

Help us end hunger in Malawi.
December 22, 2005
Almost 12,000 people march to end hunger.
An estimated 12,000 people from all over Malawi braved the sweltering the heat to join Plan-supported communities on a 15.5 mile march in the heart of the country, to mark the official launch of the Race Against Hunger campaign on 17 December.
The campaign's launch attracted key Malawian figures, including the Secretary for Relief and Disaster Preparedness, Dr Meria Nowa Phiri and Foreign Affairs Minister Davis Katsonga, who both put on their walking boots to join in the march.
Several Malawian companies have already pledged support for campaign projects, which will focus on using modern technologies and drought-resistant crops to combat the country's chronic food-security problems.
Dr Nowa Phiri said: "This campaign is not only looking for long-term solutions to the food shortage that Malawi is facing, but also using local resources, knowledge and energy to find our own answers to our nation’s challenges."
Plan Malawi Country Director Lillian Okwirry added: "The campaign will mainly seek to draw on lessons learned from local success stories.
"If we combine local knowledge with international aid, we can win this race against hunger."
