Advocate to end poverty
We at YUGA call on our Congress to support the Global Food Security Act of 2009, which calls on government to expand its foreign assistance for agriculture and agricultural research.
The Global Food Security Act of 2009
What does it do?
The overall goal of the Act is to promote global food security, improve agricultural productivity, and support the development of institutions of higher learning for agricultural practices. There is a strong emphasis on research and aid.
The Global Food Security Act will expand the areas of aid the United States gives. Aid will now cover conservation farming (to better protect the environment), nutrition for vulnerable populations, and the economic integration of people in extreme poverty.
Lastly, the Act will create an Emergency Rapid Response to Food Crisis Fund.” This fund will provide money to get resources as quickly as possible to people in emergencies such as flooding, severe drought, earthquake, or hurricane.
What is food security?
A person or community’s food security is their ability to access food. Good food security is when people are able to buy or grow enough food to live a full and healthy life. Food insecurity may change over time or move in cycles such as farming seasons due to an emergency like a natural disaster, bad harvest, or high market prices. High food insecurity can lead to severe hunger or famine.
Urge your local lawmakers to support the Global Food Security Act.
