Now that you know your facts, help your peers understand the root causes of poverty.

When talking to your peers about Global Poverty it can be helpful for them to understand some of the root causes of poverty and also reasons why our systems work the way they do. For example, why it’s easier for some to attend college, or get a high paying job. Choose an activity below and get your peers thinking outside the box!

Run an interactive activity with your club or class!

If you have half an hour, try the activities A Step Ahead or World Wealth Map to help your peers understand some of the root causes of poverty and why some people in the world start out life with greater advantages.

Race to the Bottom is fun way to see the effects of international corporations and trade on developing countries competing to have a foreign company invest.

Do a 10 minute Teach-In!

If you can get your teacher to give you 10 minutes of class time, do a Teach-In {.pdf, 420k}. This interactive activity encourages your peers to think about some of the myths and sterotypes about poverty and give their opinion through movement!

Or test their knowledge of poverty in the United States with a moving true/false activity.

Show a film!

Reserve a space in your school or community and show a film highlighting the issue of poverty {.pdf, 603k}. You could show the film during a class, after school or in the evening. Encourage your teachers to give students who attend extra credit. You can choose films from our Poverty Film List or you can find one of your own.
