October 4, 2007
Two years have passed since a devastating earthquake rocked communities throughout Pakistan.

Plan was quick to respond and, with the help of our supporters here in the U.S. as well as across the globe, we were able to provide 150,000 affected children and their families with immediate assistance and relief.

But immediate relief (while still critical) is no permanent solution to the problems faced by families affected by disasters. Children and families need long-term rehabilitation efforts — and they need to be a part of those efforts.

Plan’s rehabilitation programs in Pakistan, therefore, began without delay once children’s and families’ immediate needs were met. Top on the list — in addition to rebuilding livelihoods, providing psychosocial support, and repairing and constructing homes and building — was supporting community learning.

Over the last two years, much progress has been made:
  • 7,800 girls and boys in the Siran Valley are enjoying access to improved education in 75 schools
  • Adolescent girls now have improved access to quality secondary education through a newly established Community Managed School in Siran Valley
  • Parent-Teacher Associations and Student Representative Councils have been formed in 60 schools to build ownership and increase participation in school governance
  • 3,200 children between the ages of three and five are enrolled in 94 Early Childhood Care and Development Centers and six home-based centers
  • 1,100 girls and boys are members of 55 children’s forums where, among other activities, they’re learning about their health and children’s rights
  • The reconstruction of 12 schools has begun and the construction of 10 new schools is underway
