Plan is proud to be recognized by a group of 116 experts as one of the top 15 nonprofits working in the field of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). Plan was selected a top WASH organization by Philanthropedia, an organization that evaluates nonprofits by surveying large groups of experts, asking them to identify the top nonprofits working in their sector.

Globally, more than 2.5 billion people lack improved sanitation facilities and over 884 million people still use unsafe drinking water sources. Poor water, sanitation, and hygiene have many serious consequences. Each year, 3.5 million people die because of waterborne diseases. Children, particularly girls, miss out on their education because their schools lack private and decent sanitation facilities. And women are forced to spend large parts of their day fetching water, leaving children unattended in homes.

Over the past two months, Philanthropedia surveyed 116 experts working in water, sanitation, and hygiene - with an average of 14 years of work experience in the field - to identify those organizations that were making the biggest positive impact in the field. Philanthropedia’s experts – comprising of funders, researchers, nonprofit senior staff, and consultants – were asked to consider a range of nonprofits including those providing direct service, advocacy, litigation, research, education, and other areas.

Out of a total of 106 reviewed nonprofits, the experts identified fifteen that they considered to be the top-recommended, high-impact nonprofits working in WASH at the international level. Plan was ranked #12.

Some of reviews experts had about Plan’s impact were:

  • “Plan has made high impact through the promotion of CLTS (Community-Led Total Sanitation), and construction of water and sanitation facilities.”
  • “They have an excellent leadership particularly in improving approaches to sanitation programming.”
  • “Their project success and sound methods and approaches used is their evidence of impact.”
