Now even one week after Cyclone Sidr struck Bangladesh, updated government estimates put the total number of families affected by the storm at over 1 million. According to the Disaster Management Control Room in Dhaka, the death toll has risen to over 2,700, over 6,600 people are injured and over 2,500 people are still missing.
More than 7 million children are without shelter, without food to eat, without clean water to drink.

The current situation
A government-enforced evacuation of nearly a million people as Sidr approached saved thousands of lives, but many people still need our help.
The total number of affected families stands at more than one million. Crops on 29,374 acres of land have been completely destroyed and partially damaged on another 855,525 acres, according to the government. Some 792 educational institutions have been completely destroyed and 4,393 partly damaged. Embankments of about 35 miles of length have been damaged, 36 miles of road destroyed completely, and 54,648 miles of road partly damaged.
Survivors' immediate needs are for shelter, food and clothing. Young children, babies and lactating mothers are particularly vulnerable: there is no provision for baby food and water and sanitation and medicines are all scarce.
Survivors face a growing risk of diarrhea and other water-borne diseases. Safe drinking water has also become a major concern: the cyclone has damaged the tube wells and sweet water ponds have become saline from the tidal surge.
Our staff in Bangladesh has been on the scene since the cyclone struck last Friday, actively working to ease the pain for children and their families. They have informed us that no sponsored children or their families were killed or injured.
We will continue to post updates as new information arrives.
