Earthquake strikes Indonesia

November 26, 2007
A powerful earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale has struck Western Nusa Tenggara Province in Indonesia. The earthquake — which struck on Sunday morning — was felt in Dompu, Bima and as far away as Bali (see map, right).

Aftershocks with magnitudes of over 5 are keeping many families in Dompu District from re-entering their homes. Also, reports of a possible tsunami in the Kilo Sub District have motivated families in that area to evacuate to higher ground.

Dompu District is a Plan-supported area and Bima a former Plan working area that was phased out this year.

All Plan families are safe. Unfortunately, the earthquake is responsible for three casualties and more than 190 injuries in affected areas. One hospital has been badly damaged as well as over 1,400 homes (more than 300 heavily damaged).

Right now, the local government still has the capacity to control the situation and has not issued any request for assistance from the international community. However, Plan Indonesia is maintaining close coordination with UN and government agencies and the NGO network.
