Recovery following Hurricane Felix is well underway in Nicaragua, but children and families continue to need assistance. "Thank you" from Nicaragua
Thanks to our supporters, Plan was immediately able to deliver 300 tons of humanitarian aid (including water, food and medicines) to communities in Nicaragua hit by Hurricane Felix in September. We’ve also begun rebuilding homes and schools, repairing wells and latrines, strengthening community organizations, and providing psychosocial support to affected children.

Watch a short video showing the difference you're support is making in Nicaragua.

In the weeks and months following the hurricane, priorities will continue to include strengthening community organizations, reestablishing education, and improving health, food security and housing for children and their families.

As Felix destroyed almost 57,000 acres of crops and 15,000 acres of fruit trees, Plan is currently assisting communities to develop reforestation initiatives that will help recover the balance in their ecosystem. We’re also working to help restore food production: during November, for instance, we provided seeds and agricultural tools to restart the cultivation of maize, beans and bananas. To assist families while they are awaiting the March 2008 harvest, Plan has been coordinating with other agencies to provide families with “food for work” opportunities during the coming months.

Without question, the children and families affected by Hurricane Felix will continue to need assistance for quite some time; however, they have asked us to thank everyone who has made it possible for them to begin reclaiming their lives.
