Introducing Fabiola from Cameroon

by Because I am a Girl

Fabiola is a high school student from rural Cameroon. She is a member of Plan Cameroon’s Youth Empowerment through Technology, Arts and Media (YETAM) project. Along with other youth, Fabiola produces youth media to raise awareness and create positive change in gender issues and girls’ access to their rights. She has produced media pieces on early marriage, early pregnancies, school dropout, and education of the girl child for other youth, parents and local leaders as well. In addition to media production, Fabiola is also a talented singer and songwriter. She has a powerful and passionate voice which she lends to songs of encouragement and empowerment for girls of her community.

Fabiola represented her peers as a girl delegate at the 55th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW55) in 2011, where she played a crucial role in securing Canadian governmental support and leadership for establishing an international day of the girl-child. The international day of the girl-child was ultimately adopted by the UN General Assembly later that year.

Following the CSW55, Fabiola was inspired to establish “Girls on the Front” (G-Front), an association that aims to ensure girls have more opportunities to promote and defend their rights locally, nationally and internationally. Fabiola returned in 2012 for CSW56 where she once again spoke out passionately and confidently on issues that affect her and her peers as a young woman growing up in Cameroon, as well as the potential of working with youth using Information and Communications Technology for development (ICT4D).

We are looking forward to having Fabiola back in New York City where she will share her experiences with those joining us for our International Day of the Girl celebrations.
