The second annual Move to Stop AIDS Dance-a-thon event was a great success, with community members from around Rhode Island coming out to support the cause. YUGA members danced throughout the night to help support YUGA’s HIV/AIDS Campaign by raising awareness and donations to help halt the HIV/AIDS pandemic: over $5,500 was raised to support Plan’s HIV/AIDS programs in Uganda!

One of the highlights of the evening was the appearance of Providence Mayor, David Cicilline. He presented YUGA with a Citizen’s Citation and was pleased to see youth involved in increasing awareness of global issues. The mayor applauded YUGA’s efforts and the “the inspiration you give to young people of our neighborhoods, helping them to learn of the pressing issues of our day and encouraging them to get involved.”

Other spectacular performances that brought the crowd to their feet throughout the night included Providence Youth Slammers, RIC Ballroom Dancers, Alima Dance Group, Jon Hope, and RI Shakaz Krew. In addition to dancing, guests also signed letters advocating for the HIV/AIDS Prevention Act of 2007, which will be sent to Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed in hopes of reaching Congress.

Right now, 40 million people throughout the world are living with HIV/AIDS — and millions more are affected by the pandemic. The Move to Stop AIDS Dance-a-thon is an annual event organized by the member of Plan’s Youth Engagement team to help raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and raise funds to help support those affected by the virus. All the proceeds raised at the event will go toward Plan USA’s HIV/AIDS programming in Uganda which provides children affected by HIV/AIDS with supplies, training and community support.
