How has Plan used funds raised after the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami?

These are a just few examples of what we have accomplished with your support:
  • Plan distributed emergency water supplies to 81 camps for 8,000 internally displaced people in Indonesia and rehabilitated a water system to provide more than 6,000 people in eight villages with safe, clean water.
  • Supplemental feeding programs in Indonesia eliminated severe malnutrition in six villages.
  • In India we trained counselors reaching more than 17,000 children.
  • Plan supplied fisherman, carpenters and masons with the equipment and tools they needed to quickly return to work.
  • Plan launched a radio program covering 80 percent of the Sri Lanka to provide classes for students affected by the tsunami while we worked with communities to rebuild schools.
  • Plan worked directly with children in tsunami affected areas to gather their input on housing designs and has completed a 200-home settlement in Sri Lanka.
  • Microfinance projects, including $250,000 in loans and grants, are helping women and their families rebuild.
The following is part of an interview with Haryani a mother of three children who is a health cadre in a Posyandu (village health center) in Indonesia:

“I have also seen some improvements if comparing the situation before and after the tsunami. Now we have a Posyandu building, so we can make planning for more intensive activities, not only once for a month or sometimes it was once in three months (scaling weight, basic immunization & counseling).Cadres and mothers usually cook vegetables, peas, chicken soup and other menus for children. There were five children under the red line several months ago. We involved the mothers to actively join a 12-day nutrient training. Cadres also assisted the mothers to give nutritious food their children. Now, the five children have improved their weights.” Haryani told us that the supplementary feeding program has adjusted variation of menu for each meeting.

“I also have had opportunity to participate in Posyandu training, twice, which facilitated by Plan. Now, I have become more understand about Taman Posyandu and variation of activities, such as nutrient training, ECCD, supplementary feeding, instead of scaling weight, immunization & counseling. It has encouraged cadres to be more creative and involve the mothers. The most different thing with training that I have attended in the past is that Plan staffs have assisted us to practice the training by giving direct example of activities with the children and mothers in Posyandu sites.

“We have learned many new things. The easiest result that we can observe is the [children under five] who have involved in Posyandu activities are becoming more active, brave, able to playing and are talking with their friends, not keeping silent and [clinging] to their mothers like before.”
