Disputed election results have sparked widespread violence in Kenya, resulting in more than 140 deaths and displacing more than 70,000 people.

Riots broke out on Sunday following the controversial re-election and swearing in of Mwai Kibaki as President amid allegations that the vote had been rigged. Police have been deployed in force in all major cities.

Plan is supporting the Kenyan Red Cross and other local organizations providing emergency assistance to people displaced and otherwise adversely impacted by the post-election violence in Kenya.

Communication across the country is disrupted and many affected areas remain inaccessible due to illegal roadblocks and continued unrest.

None of Plan’s program areas are in the center of the violence, but all Kenyans are affected by the current situation.

All sponsor visits to Kenya are suspended until further notice.
