Communities Rebuild After Cyclone Phailin
On the 13th of October, Cyclone Phailin crashed into the coastline of Odisha, India with devastating winds and severe flooding that has left a trail of destruction behind in its wake.
It has been estimated that nearly 12 million residents have returned to their communities to find that their homes, farms, and other infrastructure have been destroyed or determined structurally unsafe.
These families are now struggling to rebuild their lives with the few resources that are readily available.
“Early evacuation has helped to save thousands of lives. However, devastation is widespread and cyclone-affected communities need dedicated and long-term support to get back on their feet,” says Bhagyashri Dengle, the Executive Director of Plan India.
Women and Children At Risk
Plan has begun relief operations and is working with 2,000 households which are in the most need of assistance in the Ganjam district. Since women and children are often the most vulnerable in the days following a disaster, their safety, security, and welfare will be at the heart of Plan’s relief efforts.
Plan's relief operations will provide:
- Access to proper sanitation and educational services
- Psychological support, and
- Child protection services

We have been internationally recognized for our ability to protect children from abuse, exploitation, neglect and violence, when they are the most vulnerable.
