May 2014: See How You're Renewing Hope in Plan Communities!
Letter from the Editor
We hope 2014 has gotten off to a good start for you!
Here at Plan, we’ve been busy responding to a few crises – Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and the Ebola outbreak in West Africa – and our efforts have been possible only with your support. So far your generosity has allowed Plan to help almost 700,000 people affected by the typhoon: we’ve provided food to 395,000 people; 138,000 people have been given shelter assistance; 94,000 people now have access to clean and safe drinking water; and 10,000 children are able to play, learn, and receive emotional support.
More recently, a deadly Ebola outbreak has surfaced in Guinea, with neighboring countries on high alert and mobilizing coordinated public health responses. As of April 21, 203 suspected cases of viral hemorrhagic fever have been recorded in Guinea, with 129 reported deaths. Plan is providing support to Guinean authorities in responding to the epidemic, particularly in the area of logistics and dissemination of public health information to communities. Schools and children are being particularly targeted. Prevention and education are key, given that there is no treatment or vaccine available. Plan offices in Liberia and Sierra Leone are also conducting awareness-raising activities, and Plan Mali is ready to respond if the virus continues to spread.
In the face of such emergencies, we are grateful to have you as partners in our work – and we want you to know we listen to and value your thoughts! As you can see from this updated e-newsletter layout, we’ve heard your opinions and have streamlined the way in which we deliver news to you. Aside from this monthly e-newsletter, our website is constantly being refreshed with program highlights, children’s stories, and personal insights from around the world. Please keep letting us know what you think – we can’t continue on this journey without your critical support!
As we approach the summer, we wanted to let everyone know about Plan’s youth Leadership Summit. The Summit includes five days of workshops and activities that empower young people to lead and help others. The application deadline is May 1 – so pass on the info or apply today!
One last update for now: For those of you who had the chance to see Girl Rising in theaters, we hope the film was inspiring! If you weren't able to catch it at the movies, you can now order the DVD. Right now with the GRPlan promo code, 15 percent of your DVD purchases will go back to Plan International USA!
On behalf of everyone at Plan, we thank you for your support and hope that you will enjoy this month’s issue!
