Birth Registration: Getting Everyone in the Picture
230 million children around the world have never had their births registered, making them effectively invisible in the eyes of their governments. Unregistered children find it more difficult to claim the legal identity that can help them access services and opportunities later on in life. Governments with a low number of registered citizens don’t know their populations and can’t effectively plan for their current and future needs.
Plan International USA is working to remedy the problem.
Since 2005, Plan has helped register 40 million children around the world and influence laws in 10 countries so that 153 million can enjoy the rights to a birth certificate. Plan implements Count Every Child activities in 36 countries around the world and is supporting digital birth registration projects in four of those countries.
