Following the controversial presidential elections in Kenya, violent unrest has resulted in 486 deaths and the displacement of 255,000 people from their homes (Source: Reuters, courtesy of alertnet.org).
Although the situation in Kenya remains tense and violent in many places, some calm is beginning to return in key city centers.
All Plan staff members in Kenya who can travel safely to their offices (including field offices) are expected to resume responsibilities on Monday, January 7th. At that time staff will contact local community leaders, interest groups, youth and children’s groups, schools and local government partners to assess the situation.
While our colleagues in Kenya have reported that the recent violence has not centered on any Plan-affiliated communities (and up to now we have no reports of sponsored children or their families being specifically affected), all Kenyans are deeply affected by the current situation and all are calling for a peaceful solution.
Plan is supporting the Kenyan Red Cross and other local organizations providing emergency assistance to people displaced and otherwise adversely impacted by the post-election violence in Kenya.
Information for sponsors
Plan-affiliated communities are not at the center of the violence, and so far there are no reports of sponsored children or their families being affected.
We will of course contact sponsors directly if we receive any news that sponsored children have been affected. Please note that all sponsor visits are currently suspended for safety reasons, but we hope that they will be able to resume as soon as possible.

All contributions will support the relief efforts of the Kenyan Red Cross and other appropriate responding organizations.
Please visit this website for further updates on the situation as more information becomes available.
