Matching gifts: A way to help girls

Mrs. Kouanda B., her infant son and six-year-old daughter, Sanata. Sanata is a second-grader in a school built by Plan and its partners in Burkina Faso, West Africa, called BRIGHT (Burkinabé Response to Improve Girls’ Chances to Succeed).

73 percent of girls in Burkina Faso never finish primary school
Girls in the tiny country of Burkina Faso must overcome great obstacles to obtain even a basic education.
Tounasa, who is seven, must stay home to care for younger brothers and sisters and collect firewood and water while her parents work in the fields. There is no time for Tounasa to attend school.
Marceline is eight and the youngest child in her family. She can’t attend the local school because it has no private latrine for girls.
Donate today to double your gift to help girls in Burkina Faso attend school.
What will your donation do?
Your gift will help build three more classrooms and an on-site bisongo the Burkinabé word for child-care center in 132 girl-friendly schools in Burkina Faso. These schools are part of an innovative school program funded by a grant from the USAID-Millennium Challenge Corporation and led by Plan called BRIGHT Burkinabé Response to Improve Girls’ Chances to Succeed.
A special pool of contributions from generous Plan supporters is being made available to match all gifts up to $200,000, dollar for dollar, for BRIGHT schools. The value of any gift you make today will be doubled!
Why is your donation so important?
Burkina Faso is a country roughly the size of Colorado and has a population of about 13 million, almost half of whom live in poverty. Typically both parents must work long hours, either in the fields or in the market, just to keep their families alive. Instead of attending school, the older girls in the family who are six, seven, or eight years old must stay home and care for the younger children in the household while the parents eke out a living.
Plan has worked in Burkina Faso for more than 27 years, so we know the people and the communities of this country. Right now Plan is helping 38,800 children and families obtain basic nutrition and health care and attain economic improvements.
Aided by local families and leaders who want their girls to get an education, Plan is leading the BRIGHT schools program to help Burkina Faso communities close the gap in education between boys and girls and build a brighter future for all their children. Your gift today will help Plan bring all BRIGHT schools to 100 percent capacity, so we can give more young girls the opportunity to obtain an education and hope for a brighter future.

Your gift to Plan will be doubled today. Donate now.
