Continuing a family legacy in China
For Joe and Nancy Logan of Jamestown, RI, funding a Plan project provided the opportunity both to make a difference in the lives of children and to honor the memory of family members who had been medical missionaries in China.
In May of 2001, the Logans endowed the Logan Family Fund at Plan. Established in memory of Joe’s parents, this fund provides much needed health care — with an emphasis on eye, ear, nose and throat (EENT) care — for children in the Shaanxi Province of China.
“There is no doubt that this project is the most heartwarming thing we’ve ever done,” comments Nancy Logan. “We were also very fortunate that we had an opportunity to visit a project area . . . It was an experience we’ll never forget.”
As with all donor-funded Plan projects, the Logans receive comprehensive semi-annual reports from Plan China on the accomplishments in health education for children and families, training for local doctors, and the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the communities served. But perhaps the most satisfying report the Logan’s have received came directly from a little girl named Xiao who had become deaf from taking an improper medication.
Xiao, through the Logan’s project, received a hearing aid and was sent to a language training school for the deaf. Xiao’s parents have noted that she is much happier and more active since attending the school. Xiao told Plan China’s Lucy Zhang, “Plan has really helped me. I like the language training because now I can talk with others about my feelings and ideas.”
