Raise awareness!

Raise awareness about climate change!

Make posters
Display posters around your school and community highlighting 10 steps people can take to reduce carbon emissions and energy use and stop global warming. Use some of the suggestions below or come up with actions on your own!

  • Switch out light bulbs for compact fluorescent bulbs.
  • Unplug electronics you are not using.
  • Decrease your use of car air conditioning — your car will be more fuel efficient and release fewer emissions.
  • Drink tap water. Bottled water creates a lot of waste in production and trash. The majority of bottled water comes from a tap!
  • Put your computer in sleep mode. Screen savers waste energy. Without a screensaver you save $50 on your electricity bill.
  • Use a sweater instead of turning up the heat in your house.
  • Air dry your clothes.
  • Ride a bike or car pool — or use public transportation.
  • Hang drapes on your windows. It will keep your house cooler in the heat and warmer in the winter!
  • Bring your own bags shopping.
  • Recycle and compost food waste.

Classroom contests
Hold a contest in your class or your school to encourage people to recycle and conserve energy!

Get permission from your teacher and administrators, and see which student or class can get the most people to bring in things to recyle. The contest can last a day, a week, or even a month. Consider rewarding the class who recycles the most with a pizza party, or the student who recycles the most with a night of no homework! You can also contact local businesses in the area about getting other prizes donated!

Earth Day
April 22, 2008 is a time to reflect, evaluate and take action. Hold an Earth Day event in your school or community to raise awareness. Show films, have events where you sign petitions and pledge to decrease the impact of your daily life. Visit http://www.earthday.net/ for more info.
