Help stop the killer in the kitchen

April 24, 2008
“Every year, the killer in the kitchen is responsible for 1.6 million deaths.”
— World Health Organization

Who is this “killer in the kitchen”?

Believe it or not — it’s smoke.

Indeed, the "killer in the kitchen" is responsible for the deaths of 1 million children and 600,000 women each year. Millions more are chronically sickened.

You can help stop this killer with a one-time gift of $40.

What will your donation do?
Your gift of $40 will make it possible for one mother to build a safe, fuel-efficient wood-burning stove for her family. Called a Justa stove, after the woman who designed it, this stove:
  • heats faster — cooking takes less time
  • is fuel efficient (a traditional stove uses 14 pieces of firewood to cook a meal rather than 4 with a Justa stove)
  • frees up time for children and their mothers
  • is environmentally friendlier
  • burns cleaner indoors — the old, chimney-less stoves blackened the inside walls of the home with soot
The Justa stove is a technologically simple, proven model
Inhaling indoor smoke more than doubles a child’s risk of pneumonia and other acute respiratory infections. Women exposed to indoor smoke are three times more likely to suffer from breathing disorders like chronic bronchitis, emphysema and lung cancer.

The benefits of a Justa stove are immediate: household air quality is improved as there is no smoke in the house; children carry less firewood with less frequency — freeing more time for studying and recreation; and cooking takes less time because the stove retains heat.

Mirian, a mother in Honduras, had this to say about her Justa stove: "Before, we cooked on a stove with a large opening that would take a lot of firewood and the house would fill with smoke. Now, with just a little wood, the day's cooking can be done and the house is kept cleaner."

Give a poor family a fuel-efficient stove
We're hoping to provide Justa stoves to more than 6,000 families — and you can help.

Your gift of any amount will go entirely to buy one family in Honduras a potentially life-saving stove.

Thank you for helping stop the killer in the kitchen!
