Plan USA to Sponsor SENE Leading Women Summit:
Building Effective Mentor-Protégé Relationships

WARWICK, Rhode Island (May 28, 2008) - Leading Women of South Eastern New England (SENE), an association dedicated to inspiring, powering and honoring the success of women leaders in organizations, today announced it will host a half-day workshop dedicated to the topic of mentoring and developing strategic relationships for career and business success.

Many companies are managing or launching mentoring programs. Women executives are faced with the challenges of a busy work-life and often find that they cannot put sufficient time and energy into developing a mentor-protégé relationship. Making time for professional and personal development is a challenge but the value of developing mentoring relationships must be viewed as a top priority for women who are committed to advancing in their careers and lives.

Leading Women’s Summit will address the value and ways to get the most from a mentor-protégé relationship.

Attendees will participate in roundtable discussions and learn more about:
  • the important benefits and values of mentoring relationships
  • the responsibilities of mentors and protégés
  • possible roadblocks to successful mentor/protégé relationships
  • the establishment of boundaries and expectations and
  • strategies for making the most of a mentor-protégé relationship
Joan Countryman will launch the Summit with a Keynote presentation, sharing her inspirational stories of leadership and mentoring.

About Joan Countryman
Joan Countryman has a long a distinguished career in education. She is the former head of Lincoln School in Providence, Rhode Island, a position she held for 12 years until her retirement in 2005. In August 2006, she was invited to consultant and launch the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, a boarding school that provides education and leadership experiences to impoverished youth in that country. Countryman served as interim head of the school through its opening and first term until April 2007. Countryman felt the true significance of the $40 million boarding school when Nelson Mandela, Nobel Peace Prize winner and former president of South Africa, joined the speaker roster at opening ceremony.

Joan Countryman served as Assistant Head for Academic Planning and Director of Studies at Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia, where Joan Countryman taught mathematics from 1970 to 1993. Countryman is a member of the Board of Managers of Haverford College, the Board of Trustees of Sarah Lawrence College, the Board of the Providence Journal Company, the Board of Trustees of Women and Infants Hospital, the Advisory Council of the Women’s Fund of Rhode Island, and the Board of Trustees of the Paul Cuffee School, a non-profit, public charter school. Joan Countryman has also served on the boards of the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools, the National Association of Principals of Schools for Girls, and the National Association of Independent Schools.

Joan grew up in Philadelphia and was the first African-American graduate of Germantown Friends School. She received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College, a Master's from Yale University, and studied at the London School of Economics as a Fulbright Scholar. Joan Countryman and her husband, Edward Jakmauh, an architect and Principal with Ballinger Associates, live in Providence and Philadelphia. They have two children and four grandchildren.
