“Plan’s support has brought new hope in my life…”
- Manju, a former victim of child trafficking, currently continuing her education with Plan’s help, Banke, Nepal
Child traffickers feed off of desperation. They target those in need, exploit the unfortunate, and endanger the lives of children and women.
Children and families in the communities where Plan works often make the perfect targets for child traffickers.
How is Plan helping?
To most effectively protect children and women, we implement effective programs that focus on rescuing victims, ensuring rehabilitation and healthcare, and providing education and life skills training.
The Better Life Option Program in Nepal is one such program. Recently evaluated as one of our most effective programs to provide gender awareness and life skills training to adolescents, the Better Life Option Program is designed to improve the life skills of girls and boys as well as to increase community awareness of gender equity, children’s rights, and critical issues. Graduates, especially girls, are linked with vocational training on veterinary, electronic and computer courses.
How does awareness and knowledge fight child trafficking?
One of the best ways to protect children and their communities from child traffickers and other predators is to increase their awareness and knowledge about gender equity, children’s rights and critical issues such as child trafficking, sexual exploitation and child labor.
The more knowledgeable children and their families are about their rights and about the dangers that predators such as child traffickers pose, the more skillfully they can avoid and resist dangerous situations. And the more effectively they can fight and prevent future situations.
What do the children and women have to say?
“Now I can make jhalla (natural woven mats) for my income and family needs and become self-reliant. Such skills help girls like us to raise our confidence level, make income and stand on our own feet so that we will be out of risk of being exploited.”
Asha, adolescent, participant of jhalla/jute mat making course
“The Better Life Option Program class has helped me understand how girls are at risk in our society. Now the level of confidence has been increased due to the Better Life Options Program and I feel that I can make some contribution to save others from the risky situation in my community.”
