Plan releases Global Food Crisis report

October 20, 2008
The global food crisis is affecting children’s health and education, and is reducing the chances of their escaping poverty.

As the global food crisis takes hold, Plan has launched a report that reveals how the worst off families in Africa and Asia are struggling to feed themselves.

Understanding the Impact of Food Prices on Children calls for more attention to child-focused policies as government’s and aid agencies rush to put in place systems to help poor farmers and families. For young children, programs to ensure adequate nutrition in the early years of life are crucial. For older children, school feeding programs can make a significant difference in a child’s ability to concentrate in school. For the family as a whole, cash transfers can help families take care of their immediate food needs as well as protect their children’s health and education.

The headlines are loud and clear: we are facing a global food crisis that threatens the most vulnerable people in the poorest countries of the world. Plan is tackling the problem in a number of ways: short-term emergency food relief and long-term solutions that provide resources and education so families can feed their children for years to come, including introducing drought-resistant crops, nutrition education programs, and sustainable agricultural training.

Plan is also successfully demonstrating, in country after country, that improving the economic security of households is one of the surest means of improving the food security of families.

Microfinance programs provide households with greater flexibility in managing resources and, thus, more ways of coping with adversity. Plan's microfinance initiatives have had success in even the poorest communities.
