Moving hearts across oceans

Carol Rimland knows how to get something from point A to point B. As the wife of Anthony Rimland, owner of the international freight company ARC Logistics, moving cargo is her expertise.
As ARC’s charity coordinator, she also knows how to move people’s hearts and minds. The employees of ARC Logistics sponsor 30 children in Ethiopia and 4 children in the Philippines.
Carol introduced the staff at ARC Logistics to child sponsorship in 2005. A Plan USA child sponsor herself, she knew she was helping to make a difference for the children and she felt good doing it; she wanted to infuse ARC with the same good feelings.
Carol feels that it’s important that the employees of ARC know the difference they’re making in the children’s lives. “Whenever I get a letter from one of our sponsored children, I make sure that everyone at work gets a chance to read it. They love hearing from them,” says Carol. Many of the staff write to the children and are excited to hear back from them.
In October, Carol decided to visit the field and get to know the sponsored children face to face. “I wanted to deepen our connection,” she said simply. Accompanied by Gail Savoie and Janet Trombetti of Plan USA’s Corporate Relations team, Carol got the chance to visit with a number of ARC sponsored children and view many Plan projects in the region of Shebedino, Ethiopia.
Carol had come to know the sponsored children and their families from their letters and photos over the years. The excitement of the moment brought them together on a deeper level. “It was evident how thrilled everyone was to meet each other,” says Carol.
The meeting helped to create a very strong bond between the children and Carol. She says the experience has made her feel very strongly about Plan’s mission of bettering children’s lives. And that’s certainly something she’ll take back with her.
