Raise public awareness about fair trade

Encourage your school to switch to fair trade!
Advocate for your school to be a fair trade product community. Write letters to your administration and create presentations showing the value of a fair trade school. Check out this link for ideas: www.fairtrade.org.uk/schools/why_become_a_fairtrade_school

Buy fair trade products in cafes, restaurants, and coffee shops
Buy fair trade to let companies know that you care how they treat their workers! Check out TransfairUSA’s website to find local fair trade retailers near you. Let retailers know you support fair trade and choose to buy products that support people! Go on a fair trade field trip to let companies know you care!

Celebrate! Organize a public event around fair trade
Fair Trade Month is in October and World Fair Trade Day is on 05/09/09. Talk to a local movie theater about showing a movie about economic rights and fair trade or hold a fair trade bazaar! Invite fair trade groups to provide information and samples, ask businesses to sell fair trade goods, and provide information about fair trade at your event.

Interview a local farmer
Interview a local farmer and ask them about some of the struggles she or he faces, as well as the positive aspects of their job. Then write a newspaper article revealing the information in your interview. Within this article, you may also want to include information about fair trade. Submit this news article to your school newspaper or your local town newspaper. Educate others on local businesses and the benefits of fair trade!

Create a logo
Fair trade products are identified by a specific logo so that consumers are assured that farmers receive a fair part of the profit. As a class or as part of a school fair trade group, design your own logo that shows you support fair trade products. You can then make shirts with this logo, and even sell them as a fundraiser.

Go reverse Trick-or-Treating
Organize an event to hand out fair trade chocolate! Include information about fair trade as you pass out tasty treats!
