Djenika is 10 years old and lives with her parents, brother, and sister in Croix-des-Bouquets. She is sponsored by Plan International and her home was badly affected by Hurricane Matthew.
“My parents and other neighbors lost their livestock and harvest,” she said. “My home was flooded.
“My oldest sister, who is 13, is my best friend, and we always do a lot of things together, like playing, going to church and to school. During the hurricane, we were so scared, but she helped me and gave me strength.”
Djenika and her sister want to become nurses so they can help sick children in their community. They are aware of the long walk that most people have to take to get to the health center.
“I am so sad after the hurricane,” she said. “It’s not easy to see people around you losing all they have and trying to survive. Life became a nightmare after the hurricane hit and being alive is a struggle.
You can’t imagine how happy we are that Plan International didn’t forget about us. Thank you for caring and bringing water to our community.”
