Before spreading to more than 160 countries, COVID-19, also known as coronavirus, started in China. Plan International China undertook a rapid assessment in January and quickly identified ways they could respond. We have worked with children and women in rural communities for decades and wanted to ensure these marginalized groups were not ignored.
Since the end of January 2020, Plan has provided more than 1.3 million yuan to its project partners in Shaanxi, Yunnan and Ningxia Provinces. The funds were used to purchase and distribute epidemic prevention materials, supporting the government’s response to controlling the further spread of COVID-19.
In Shaanxi Province, Plan identified and evaluated the need for supplies through the women’s federations, the Shaanxi Women and Children’s Development Foundation, and local government departments. The community groups purchased and distributed epidemic prevention and control materials, which included 17.5 tons of disinfectant, three tons of medicinal alcohol, masks and other supplies. This material is being used for local epidemic prevention control and is distributed to local communities, as well as for school student protection after schools begin their spring semester.
In addition, 100 barrels of peracetic acid, 300 barrels of disinfectant and 1,000 bottles of hand sanitizing gel for Pucheng County have been purchased and distributed. In Jiaxian County, 3,100 masks have been purchased and distributed.
Plan China is working to purchase protective clothing, electronic thermometers for schools and protective supplies for children. The items were purchased and distributed before the start of school.
In Yunnan Province, Plan donated 150,000 yuan and 100,000 yuan respectively to Honghe County and Guangnan County for the purchase of N95 masks, disposable medical surgical masks, protective clothing, disinfectants, antibacterial sprays and medical gloves.
In Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Plan donated a total of 450,000 yuan to Yinchuan City, Wuzhong City and Longde County for pandemic prevention. The funds were used for the procurement of disposable medical masks, N95 masks, disinfectant powder and liquid, hand sanitizer and medical gloves. In coordination with and support of Ningxia Shangde Family Education Construction Guidance Center and Ningxia Women’s Federation in Yinchuan City, 20,000 pairs of latex gloves, 200 barrels of alcohol-based sanitizer, 460 bottles of antibacterial hand soap and 300 masks were distributed to six key epidemic prevention communities.
The donation is a project carried out by Plan International Inc. Shaanxi Representative Office (Plan International in China) to combat the Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia. It will strictly comply with the relevant provisions of the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Administration of Activities of Overseas Nongovernmental Organizations in the Mainland of China to report to the organizations in charge of operations and the registration authority for approval and record-keeping.
Now more than ever, we need to continue our work to advance girls’ rights across the world. Donate now to help make an impact for girls in need.
