WASHINGTON - Plan International USA is pleased to announce the acquisition of Danya International’s Africa Business Unit. This acquisition further strengthens Plan’s technical proficiency in social and behavior change (SBC); monitoring, evaluation, research, and learning (MERL); use of information and communications technology (ICT); and capacity building of local, national, and regional organizations.
“This important acquisition allows Plan to further implement our strategy of impact-led development by investing in an organization that deepens our expertise in the important area of measurement and evaluation,” said Tessie San Martin, President and CEO of Plan International USA. “We are excited by the potential of our combined resources as we continue our commitment to broadening Plan’s programmatic reach and impact around the world.”
Plan and Danya first collaborated in 2015, when they were awarded a $41M USAID-funded project to support orphans and vulnerable children in Kenya. The project, named Nilinde, brings together both organizations to improve the welfare and protection of children affected by HIV/AIDS. “We are very pleased to select Plan International USA to acquire Danya’s Africa Business Unit as we focus on growing our US domestic consulting operations,” stated Dr. Jeff Hoffman, CEO of Danya International. “We have had a very collaborative relationship with Plan International USA and have been very impressed with the outstanding positive social impact work they are doing around the world for children, families, and communities.”
Danya International’s Africa Business Unit was founded in Kenya in 2008 and has had tremendous success in achieving measurable social impact, reaching more than 10 million people across East and Southern Africa with public health, agriculture, education, and food security programming. Danya’s social and behavior change programs tackle long-standing development challenges using new approaches including: direct observation therapy of tuberculosis patients using video enabled mobile phones; eLearning to expand the reach of medical training schools; drones and time lapse video presenting different perspectives for farmers to observe the effects of good agricultural practices; and simplified quasi-experimental designs to quickly measure behavior change in the communities where projects are implemented.
As part of this acquisition, Danya’s Vice President for the Africa Region, Aaron Sundsmo, has joined Plan and will be leading the integration of Danya’s capabilities into programs across the 51 countries where Plan works. Several other senior experts with expertise in MERL, ICT, SBC and capacity building will also be joining Plan in the coming months.
