Glamour Celebrates International Day of the Girl with First Lady Michelle Obama

NEW YORK CITY — In celebration of International Day of the Girl on October 11, Glamour’s The Girl Project will host "A Brighter Future: A Global Conversation on Girls’ Education," a real-time, digital global conversation with adolescent girls around the world. Using Skype technology, girls in Washington, D.C., Jordan, Peru, Tanzania, and the United Kingdom will speak with one another about the challenges they have faced and potentially overcome in attaining an education. Participating in the conversation live from the Newseum in D.C. will be First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama, actress and activist Yara Shahidi, and Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive. Glamour will also host 100 watch parties in 100 countries to push the message out to a global audience. The event is presented by Maybelline New York.

“We know that incredible things happen when a girl gets an education,” said Leive. “That's why Glamour founded The Girl Project—to help girls fighting to get the education they deserve. We’re honored to work with First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let Girls Learn initiative to stage this major global moment on behalf of every young woman who wants to make her life better."

This event also kicks off #WhenGirlsGraduate, Glamour's month of action in collaboration with Caterpillar Foundation. #WhenGirlsGraduate will support girls’ education through Glamour’s philanthropic initiative, The Girl Project. From October 11 through November 14, texting GRADS to 20222 will donate $5. Results of the campaign will be announced on-stage during Glamour’s annual Women of the Year awards ceremony in Los Angeles. Barneys New York is an additional partner of #WhenGirlsGraduate and McKinsey & Company is providing research support.

As the founding beauty sponsor of Glamour’s The Girl Project, Maybelline New York continues its efforts to make an impact with this initiative by presenting the October 11 event. The cosmetic brand first announced its philanthropic partnership with Glamour’s The Girl Project at its 100 Years Celebration in May 2015 and in 2017 will be expanding globally with programs in various areas around the world.

“We are thrilled to be taking The Girl Project to a larger global audience and building awareness for this problem that affects us all. Maybelline New York is a brand that empowers women and education is at the core of our beliefs. By giving girls access to education they grow up with more confidence which then gives them the potential to make things happen in their lives. We want to be there to support them in every way possible,” said Leonardo Chavez, Global Brand President, Maybelline New York.
