DHAKA - Plan International is preparing to respond with humanitarian assistance following the impact of Cyclone Roanu in Bangladesh, which has killed nearly two dozen people and has forced more than 500,000 people to evacuate from their homes.
“Our Emergency Response Teams have been deployed to Barguna, Bhola, and Chitaggong districts and are working around the clock to carry out a rapid assessment to measure the impact of the cyclone’s damage and determine the assistance required. We are coordinating with relevant agencies and government authorities and are gearing up to support affected children and families,” says Senait Gebregziabher, Country Director for Plan International Bangladesh.
Cyclone Roanu made landfall in Bangladesh on May 21st, bringing with it heavy rains and causing landslides and severe flooding across coastal zones, including several Plan International working areas.
“We have pre-positioned household materials and hygiene kits that we can dispatch to affected areas and distribute to communities in urgent need. These materials will be essential as children and families affected by the cyclone, particularly those forced to leave their homes, will most likely be seeking food, shelter, basic sanitation, and access to clean water,” says Gebregziabher.
A low-lying country prone to cyclones, Plan International has trained children, their parents and teachers in Bangladesh on how to prepare and respond to disasters.
During Cyclone Komen in 2015, students trained by Plan International on disaster preparedness utilized microphones to announce a cyclone alert to members of their communities. Plan International also supported 14,000 families in 2013 when Cyclone Mahasen struck the southern coast of Bangladesh.
