Plan International Responds to Hurricane Matthew in Haiti

Plan International has been on the ground in Haiti since a devastating hurricane struck on Oct. 4, leaving many people displaced, lacking essential items, and in much need of assistance.

The numbers have been overwhelming.

Nearly 600,000 children have been affected, and 112,500 children under 5 are at risk of acute malnutrition. Food, water, and dry clothes are needed immediately to prevent the spread of disease.

Plan is working with local communities to ensure needs are met. Progress is being made – but there is still much to be done.

“The only health center is far away from here,” said 37-year-old Rosena. “It can take more than two hours to get there, and sadly we don’t even have money to take public transportation. People in poor health or who are pregnant like me are more at risk, so it’s a big concern for me.”

“I am so happy that Plan International didn’t forget the families though. They brought us hygiene kits, water, and also some food, and it means a lot to me and every mother in this place. It’s a big gesture – we will never forget that. Thank you for thinking about us!’’
