As a child-centered organization, Plan International recognizes the incredible power and potential of youth. Plan works every day to provide valuable opportunities to children and youth around the world through its programs in water, sanitation, and hygiene; education; health; protection; and more.
As part of its program approach, Plan ensures children take part in decisions that affect their lives. In the United States and abroad, Plan works to support and strengthen the ability of children and youth to demand their rights in their homes, communities, at their schools, and from their governments.
In celebration of International Youth Day on Tuesday, August 12, here are a few of the ways Plan is investing in youth:
- Plan International USA Youth Advisory Board: The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is a youth-led group that advises Plan International USA, including its Board of Directors and Executive Team. Plan’s YAB members are between the ages of 12 and 22, and live in the United States.
YAB members also have the opportunity to participate at the Members’ Assembly, Plan International’s highest governing body.
- Child-Centered Community Development: Plan’s Child Centered Community Development approach supports millions of people to realize their potential and take an active role in changing their world. Plan works with children, their families, communities and governments to prioritize problems and implement agreed-upon solutions for lasting impact.
- Child and Youth Media: Plan operates close to 60 child media programs in over 30 countries to help children speak out and promote their rights. Producing their own media — such as radio, music, and video segments — is often revolutionary for many children, providing them with the chance to gain self-confidence, make their voices heard, and communicate with each other.
