Advancing gender equality and women’s agency in Jordan

Promoting the Voice and Leadership of Women Activity

Tawazon

Plan International partners with Mercy Corps through a sub-agreement to elevate Jordanian voices and support progress in economic, social and political spaces for women.

In 2015, the Jordanian government committed to closing the gender equality gap in the country by 2030 through actions including expanding girls’ and women’s economic and political participation. Still, community-, women- and youth-led organizations are fighting structural barriers to equality. In 2021, participation of women in the labor force was 15%, lower than neighboring countries like Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. Unsafe and unaffordable transportation also exacerbates women’s exclusion in public and the workforce.

What are we doing?

With funding from USAID, Plan is joining a coalition led by Mercy Corps, including Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development, Al Jidara and the Solidarity is Global Institute to elevate women’s voices and support progress for women’s rights through the Tawazon — Promoting the Voice and Leadership of Women Activity. Meaning “balance” in Arabic, Tawazon is designed to strengthen legislative framework enforcement and institutional capacity, advance gender equality, strengthen community organizations and support activities that promote women’s rights, leadership and participation in political and public life. This project will be implemented over five years.

Plan International activities include:

  • Developing and leading a gender task force to analyze and report on gender relations in Jordan, which will inform activities over the life of the project.
  • Implementing digital workshops with young people covering topics related to gender equality.
  • Designing and implementing community-, adolescent- and youth-led activities that promote gender equality and reshape gender norms in communities.
  • Conducting workshops for community-based organizations to strengthen life skills, advocacy and communication plans for supporting women’s rights and agency across the country.
Women like Alia, a project staff member from Plan International Jordan, work with girls and women in Jordan to educate them about their rights and strengthen their life skills.
