SOUTH SUDAN: Plan International Stresses Need for Accelerated Humanitarian Response

JUBA, South Sudan – International children’s rights NGO Plan International has stressed the need for stepping up the humanitarian response in South Sudan after the government and rebels signed a ceasefire agreement yesterday.

Under the deal, signed in a hotel in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, the fighting is due to come to an end within 24 hours.

Gyan Adhikari, Plan South Sudan Country Director, said: “We cautiously welcome the ceasefire, but would like to stress that latest figures show 563,669 people displaced within the country, all of whom require assistance. The situation in South Sudan remains dire, and Plan will continue its efforts to provide help to thousands of families and children who fled the fighting.”

“Our immediate concern is over urgent humanitarian needs,” says Roland Angerer, Plan’s Regional Director in Eastern and Southern Africa. “Displaced people are living in difficult conditions and many areas are still not accessible. We sincerely hope that the ceasefire holds and the military forces will soon open humanitarian corridors and respect the work of the international organizations.”

Some 46,600 have fled the country for neighboring Uganda as the crisis spills over the border. Plan has deployed an international team to help aid workers already on the ground with their emergency response.

In partnership with the World Food Programme, Plan is providing nutrition supplements to malnourished children under the age of 5 in Awerial. Plan is also establishing safe spaces for children to play, putting up emergency education facilities to reduce the risks of abuse and child soldier recruitment, and providing psychosocial support to the children affected by the crisis.
