SPONSOR A GIRL AND
SHE CAN CHANGE
THE WORLD

When you sponsor a girl, you can help young women like Gertrude fulfill their potential, achieve their dreams, and look forward to a brighter future.

On a typical day, Gertrude, age 10, wakes before dawn, washes herself, sweeps the yard, makes the tea, and cleans the dishes. All before the sun comes up. Her life has been filled with tragedy, but her will is resilient. Three years ago, her mother died and her grandmother took on the responsibility of raising her. Sadly, just 11 months later, her grandmother died too. Now, Gertrude lives with her aunt. Just the two of them, they must fight to survive.

Through sponsorship, you offer a long-term solution to vulnerable girls like Gertrude who face harsh realities like hunger, child marriage, and lack of education. By sponsoring you create a unique relationship that will inspire and empower a girl, helping her to overcome the obstacles in her way and ensure she has access to the most basic human rights. It will have ripple effects that carry through her family, her community, and ultimately, her nation.

Gertrude is young, but her eyes show that though she has seen enough hardship for a hundred lifetimes, she still has much to accomplish. You can be the catalyst for great change for children like her! Sponsor a girl today.

If you're not ready to sponsor a child, consider a gift to the Girls' Fund. The Girls' Fund ensures that girls living in the developing world have access to the most basic of child and human rights: clean water, food, security, healthcare, education, and microfinance services.

My Name is Margret

I am a 4 year old girl

Margret and family live in a community in Malawi's central region. The majority of the population works as farmers depending on the food they grow for both food and income. Houses are made of thatched grass and mud. Ox carts and bicycles are the most common methods of transportation. Roadways are unpaved travel and during the rainy season become muddy. Health centers have shortages of supplies, medical equipment and staff. Schools need renovations. More school supplies and teaching materials are needed. Safe water resources are limited and people draw drinking water from rivers and streams. The families are eager to make their lives better. Your help is greatly appreciated.

My Name is Christelle

I am a 10 year old girl

Christelle and family live in the area of South West, Burkina Faso. South West is approx. 381 kilometers from the capital city of Ouagadougo. The land is very wide and rough with hills and two rivers-Bougouriba and Mouhoun. Families live in traditional houses built with mud and sticks, called “Sukala”. More than 56% of all households in South West live below the poverty line which is estimated at about $165/year/adult. Many children particular girls do not have access to primary and secondary school due to few classrooms and the poor living conditions of their parents. The majority drop out of school because of difficult conditions, violence, walking long distances, food shortage, forced or early marriages, and unwanted pregnancies. Plan since 1993, has made a significant difference in the lives of the people. Plan built and rehabilitated over 300 classrooms for primary and secondary schools. Students were provided with school supplies and classroom desks. This led to an increase in enrollment of children especially girls. Plan supported child vaccinations and provided all households in the region with treated mosquito nets. Plan also supported the training of health professionals and village health workers, built 190 boreholes and 268 school latrines, protecting children from preventable diseases. Plan will continue to work on malnutrition problems, primary education, child rights and develop communication skills of children thru capacity building programs.

My Name is Bopha

I am a 10 year old girl

Bopha and family live in the area of Stung Treng. Stung Treng is location north east, which covers an area of 11,092 sq kilometers. The province is divided into 5 districts, 34 communes and 128 villages. Some of the challenges are flash floods caused by extensive deforestation and their remote location and seasonal migration lifestyles make them particularly difficult to reach. Newborn mortality and teenage pregnancy rates are high due to issues on quality of health care. Malnutrition among children and mothers appears to be one of the biggest issues. There is lack of access to portable water and sanitation facilities such as toilets and hand washing facilities which results in poor hygiene for children. Parents are too busy working to care for their children. School has poor enrollment, school completion is low and drop out rates are high. In 2016 Plan started its operation in Stung Treng and their main focus is to improve Early Childhood Care and Development, Nutrition, Education, Child Protection and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for the children so that they will benefit from these projects through your support.
