Sponsor a Child and
Change a Life

“A Plan-built medical center saved my life over and over again, and so did my sponsor Louise,” Carlos said. “Her regular letters showed me a different world and helped me dream of a better life for me, my family, and my society.”

From his humble beginnings as a boy with chronic bronchitis living in a makeshift house of paper and wood in Colombia, Carlos became a Director of Inter-institutional relations at Bogota’s Central University. He has travelled to 14 countries and raised millions of dollars to help students in need attend college.

Are you looking for a meaningful gift that can change the life of a child like Carlos?

Plan offers a smart and tested way to form an inspiring connection with a child through child sponsorship. When you become a sponsor, your tax-deductible contributions are pooled to support community-led, self-sustaining projects that address urgent needs in your sponsored-child’s country. This maximizes your impact, allowing you to develop a meaningful connection with a brave, determined child, while improving the lives of many.

You're just moments away from a gift that can change a child's life forever.

Thank you.

My Name is Mouniratou

I am a 1 year old girl

Mouniratou and family live in the province of Sanmatenga located in the Center-north of Burkina Faso. It covers 7,741 square kilometers and is divided into 11 communes with 381 villages. The weather is a dry season of 8 months and a rainy season of 4 months from June to September. The population is approximately 684,000 with 59% being children. It is mainly made up of the Mossi ethnic group and Animism is the dominant religion. The typical housing is mainly composed of huts built with unfired mud bricks and straw roofs. The minimum size of a family is 6 people. 34% of the population is living under the poverty line at an estimate of $165/year. Malaria, acute respiratory infections and diarrhea are the main causes of admittance to the hospital and of children death. There is usually a low attendance rate to health centers because many of the population is involved in self-medication and traditional medicine. Preschool education is not well developed due to poverty, ignorance of the system by parents and insufficient infrastructures. Plan has been working in the Province of Sanmatenga since 1976 and has contributed in making a significant difference in children’s lives. Projects have focused on the building/rehabilitating of primary and secondary classrooms. Plan is working in partnership with local associations for a social mobilization in the villages to achieve a sustainable behavior change in maternal and child health, and youth sexual and reproductive health.

Malaria is the main cause of child mortality under five. Primary school enrollment is low. Early childhood development centers and kindergartens are rare or almost inexistent. Socio-cultural practices such as early marriages, FGM and cohabitation with animals make children especially girls more vulnerable physically and psychologically. Children work in dangerous gold mines. Plan has been in the area since 1978. Plan and its partners have made significant improvements in the health, education, potable water, sanitation and income generation sectors. This is possible thanks to the contribution and the collaboration of children and their communities. Health efforts are focused on the mother and child by strengthening the operational capacities for the health districts and teenagers’ knowledge on sexual and reproductive health.
