What we focus on

We fight to achieve equality for all girls and young women.

Our girl-driven, gender-transformative approaches help girls, children and young people — in all their diversity — achieve equal rights and equal opportunity to exercise those rights.

Our program areas reflect the priorities and needs of girls across their life cycle, leveraging cross-sector expertise within our organization. We center our work around five key impact areas: Gender & Youth Equality, Education, Maternal & Child Health, Skills & Work and Humanitarian Response.

Maternal & Child Health

Too many girls, children and young women lack access to quality healthcare, particularly sexual and reproductive healthcare. Plan is committed to health equity, promoting healthy behaviors and environments, and enabling strong healthcare systems so that girls and communities can thrive.

Skills & Work

Girls and young women have big goals for their futures, but often, they don’t have the resources, networks, agency and access to pursue them. Plan provides girls and young women with programming that prepares them for professional careers of their choosing.

Humanitarian Response

Girls in conflict are some of the most vulnerable. We work with girls and other community members — before, during and after emergencies — supporting them to secure protection, pursue their rights and achieve resilience.

The GirlEngage approach

Plan’s evidence indicates that girls are best placed to drive program content and ensure its applicability to the local context. GirlEngage shifts the focus of girls from passive beneficiaries to active participants, amplifying their voices in all stages of the project cycle, from setting goals to program evaluation. By engaging girls and young women as partners and co-designers, we co-create innovative, sustainable solutions that reflect their priorities, needs and vision.

The best way to identify the challenges girls and young women face is by asking the experts: the girls themselves.
