Emergencies
We build communities’ resilience and support children’s rights to dignity and protection before, during and after disasters and conflicts.
We work with communities to provide emergency preparedness, relief and recovery, ensuring the needs of children, especially girls, and all community members are met. Plan remains in emergency areas to support longer-term projects, including school reconstruction, sustainable livelihoods, vocational training, shelter rehabilitation and access to safe water and sanitation. We also implement disaster risk reduction programs to help communities prepare for, respond to and rebound from emergencies.
In times of crisis, girls face high risk of violence, exploitation, trafficking, child marriage, unequal access to healthcare and lost educational opportunities. Plan International’s emergency response programs provide safe spaces, education and psychosocial support to the girls and young women who need it most.
Girls recover more quickly from disasters when they are involved in rebuilding their community. We act as a trusted ally that girls can rely on while navigating through conflict. The best way to identify the challenges that girls and young women face and define the path forward of success is to ask the experts: the girls themselves. We collaborate with girls to identify, prioritize, design and monitor programs and solutions that address their unique and diverse needs.

I didn’t think I wanted to talk about the rains because the feelings were so strong. I cried in those sessions, but it also helped me look for the positive side. I let out so much with my memories. … Being able to empathise through sisterhood was something new for me. We learned to take care of ourselves and each other.
Your gift to Plan International USA will be used where needed most, to help create sustainable change and address the root causes of poverty and inequality.
