Letter writing FAQs

How often should I write to my sponsored child?

The more you write, the more letters you’ll receive! Children love to receive photographs from their sponsors, which they often proudly display in their homes. We are always touched to hear from former sponsored children who still treasure their sponsors’ letters and photos, even decades later.

What should I write about?

Whether it’s a letter, email, card or quick note, your child will be glad to know they have a friend on the other side of the world who genuinely cares. Share news about your life, and ask your sponsored child about their family, friends, hobbies and favorite subjects in school.

How long will it take to receive a response?

Your letter may travel halfway around the globe to reach your sponsored child! After arriving at our program office, it will be translated into your child’s language. A volunteer may walk several miles or ride a moped to deliver your letter. We work in some remote areas, and there may be delays due to weather or road conditions. The entire journey may take a few months, but the smile your letter brings to your child’s face will be worth the wait!

What if I can’t write a letter to my sponsored child but still want to show them that I care?

We know life is busy, and there isn’t always time to write to your sponsored child. That’s why Plan created Sunny Days Magazine, an educational kids’ activity pack full of fun activities that your sponsored child will love. This way, even if you can’t send a letter, they’ll know you’re always thinking of them.

And, during the busy holiday season, you can send your sponsored child Little Treasures. These gifts are hand-delivered with a personalized card from you, so your sponsored child will feel the joy of knowing that someone across the world sent a gift just for them.

Because we care as much as you do.

Plan takes child protection very seriously, and the safety of our sponsored children is our top priority. For this reason, all correspondence must first come to our office in Rhode Island. We ask that you please make sure your letters are age-appropriate and culturally sensitive. Please do not include any personal contact details or request this information from your sponsored child.
