The Americas

Plan International works across 12 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Americas are home to some of the world’s fastest-growing economies — and some of its highest levels of inequality. For girls and young people living in poverty, that gap has real consequences. One out of every two people living in poverty in Latin America is a child, adolescent or youth, and girls bear the biggest burden.

Our focus

We support children across the region from birth to adulthood — helping them cope with crisis and adversity and building the conditions for them to thrive long term. Our work focuses on keeping girls in school, protecting children from violence and abuse and creating opportunities for young people to earn a living and have a say in their futures.

Across the Americas, poverty, violence and instability also mean that for many young people, leaving home feels like the only option. We work to change that — tackling the root causes that force families to make impossible choices, while protecting youth on the move from exploitation and trafficking.

None of this work can happen without lasting, systemic change. That’s why we also partner with communities, local organizations, and governments to help shift the laws, attitudes, and systems that hold girls back — because we know supporting individual girls only goes so far — the systems around them must change, too.
