What it means to be a board member
Serving as a Plan International USA board member gives you an opportunity to participate in the governance of an organization often ranked among the top non-governmental organizations in the world. Board members provide strategic input on how the organization advances children’s rights and equality for girls.
As a board member, you will:
- Contribute to long-term strategy development, financial stewardship and oversight.
- Provide advice and counsel to Plan management.
- Engage young people.
- Advocate for children’s rights and equality for girls.
Board members agree to demonstrate their commitment by:
Preparing for and attending board meetings that are held four times a year (two remote and two in-person) with special meetings as needed. In-person meetings are usually held in Washington, D.C.
Contributing knowledge and expertise through participation in committees or task forces.
Playing an active role in securing the financial resources required for Plan to achieve its mission. Board members are expected to leverage social and professional relationships and connections to help identify and solicit potential funders.
Making a personal contribution each year. A minimum of a $5,000 annual contribution is required.
Visiting one of Plan’s program sites at least once every three years.
Supporting Plan International USA’s mission, purpose and leadership, complying with Plan USA policies and signing an annual affirmation statement.

Currently, Plan USA is seeking board members who possess:
- A large, varied social and/or professional network of high-net-worth individuals; or
- Experience with strategic partnerships, including expertise in partnership structures for nonprofit collaborations.
